The Ping Golfweek Preview

Author: admin | Filed under: Article

The weekend started off great! Me, Nick Taylor, Larry Iverson and Darren Wallace made an unbeatable wiffleball team. We won all four of our games even coming back from an 8 run deficit to Coach Thurmond’s team. A lot of the other teams arrived at Gold Mountain in time for the ping pong tournament. It was dominated by Huskies with Kevin Spooner winning for the second year in a row.
After a fun evening of games we got ready for the tournament. We teed off around 2:00 pm on Saturday and spent some quality time preparing for the tournament hole locations and helping teach our two additions to the line up the keys to playing Gold Mountain.

In day one the wind was blowing and the golf course played very difficult. Our guys didn’t have their a-games, but the really fought hard. It just wasn’t our day. In the picture above you can see sand flying… Nick’s drive was in the middle of the fairway, but in a sand filled divot. It was just one of those days for most of us.
In a day that really beat a lot of guys down Charlie Hughes, a freshman from Maple Ridge BC, had a phenomenal finish to his day. He was six over par after 26 holes, but finished at one over. He made five birdies in his final 10 holes to lead us after day one.
Darren Wallace wasn’t far behind Charlie, he was at two over par after a pair of 73′s. We ended the day in second 12 strokes behind Oklahoma State. We knew we had our work cut out for us if wanted to catch them.
We came out in the final round excited and prepared to make a charge. In the end Oklahoma State was just too tough for us this week. The guys fought hard and finished second in a great field. Nick was our low finisher after a final round 69 that moved him into a tie for 10th. We have a few days to practice and work on our games to get ready for our next event in Palm Springs.
